In the second season as an “Emerging Sport,” girl’s prep flag football held championship contests on Saturday, May 16, at Liberty HS in Hillsboro. Tualatin won the title for the OSAA 6A/5A/4A/3A/2A/1A classification, 32-26 in overtime over So. Salem. David Douglas took third place with a 13-12 win over Amity, and Central Christian downed Gresham, 51-13 for fourth place. The sport could advance to a “sanction” event next year by the OSAA. Fifty-eight teams competed this year. The North Bend/Marshfield team played in Special District 8 and was second (7-3, 8-3) to South Medford (9-1, 10-1). Grants Pass was third (7-3, 8-4), followed by Coquille (3-7, 3-8), North Medford (2-6, 3-7) & Eagle Pt. (0-8, 0-11).

At the 16-team Wally Ciochetti Invitational, Cottage Grove HS, Friday, May 15, Henley won the boy’s team competition with 160-pts., Marist Catholic was second with 94, followed by Crook Co. (73), Philomath (66), Marshfield in fifth (47), Bandon tied Siuslaw for seventh (36) and North Bend was 14th (7), Coquille 16th (5). On the girl’s side, Klamath Union won with 98-points, Bandon was right behind with 85, followed by Henley with 82, Marshfield was eighth (37), North Bend tenth (27), followed by Coquille (25), and Siuslaw (23). Individually for the girls – Bandon senior Marley Petrey won the 100 (12.51), the 200 (25.31) in a state best 2A time, and the 300LH (45.09). Her heir apparent, junior Giada Moore, was right behind her teammate, placing second in the 200 (26.29), second in the 300LH (47.12) and second in the Triple Jump (32-8). Coquille Super Soph Ella Henthorn won the 1500 (4:38.07). Addison Horning, another South Coast sophomore, was fourth (4:47.69). Siuslaw junior Aidell Cadet won the 100H (16.18) & High Jump (5-0). Marshfield girls (Annhelena Vancannon, Rylee McNally, Kindall Wyatt, Jordyn Mickelson) were third in the 4X100 Relay (51.37). North Bend sophomore Zoya Wilson won the Shot Put (36-4), while Marshfield senior Sierra Sauers was second in the Discus (109-4). Coquille sophomore Bristol Layton was second in the Long Jump (15-5.5). For the boys: Bandon junior Noah Brown won the 800 (2:00.62). Siuslaw sophomore Henry Stone was second in the 1500 (4:05.39). Bandon sophomore Beckett Pahls was third (4:09.12). Marshfield senior Jaxson Stovall won the 3000 (8:42.94) in a 4A best time. Pirate sophomore Christian Baugh was second in the 300IH (41.73). Siuslaw senior Will Johnson was second in the Pole Vault (13-6) & and won the Triple Jump (47-2) with not only the best leap in 3A, but the state overall. Bandon’s Noah Brown was third the PV (13-0).

Marshfield tees off Monday morning, May 18, at the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union State 4A Boy’s Golf Championships at Emerald Valley, Creswell. Pirate senior Enoch Niblett is the No. 1 seed for Marshfield and will play in a three-person trio that includes two other number one seeds, Landon Neistadt, Pendleton/Griswold and Atlas Ferreira, Mazama. They are scheduled to tee off at 8:15a.
