Independence Day is almost here, Hillsboro! Join us on Saturday, July 4 for the annual Fourth of July Parade, presented by the Rotary Club of Hillsboro. Here is what is happening that morning, along with a few road closures and parking reminders. Morning schedule: - Hillsboro Rotary Run 5K, 8:00 AM. Starts and finishes at the Hillsboro Civic Center. - Kids Dash, 9:00 AM. Starts at the Walters Cultural Arts Center and finishes at the Hillsboro Civic Center. - Fourth of July Parade, 10:00 AM. See the route in the following slides. Road closures and parking: Closures along the parade route go into effect at 7:45 AM. No parking is allowed on the route, and vehicles must be removed by 7:45 AM. No parking signs will be posted along the route within three days of the event, so please watch for them and plan ahead. For safety, closures on one-way streets will be set a block up from the route. A note on the 5K: as runners and walkers leave the start line, there will be a brief, temporary closure of the northbound lane on N 1st at Main while participants head north toward NE Jackson Street. Northbound lanes reopen once everyone is clear, and motor officers will be out to help. Fireworks are part of the fun on the Fourth, and Hillsboro Police and Hillsboro Fire & Rescue (@hillsborofire) want everyone to enjoy them safely and legally. Before you light anything, know the difference. In Oregon, legal fireworks stay on the ground and do not explode. Fountains, sparklers, and ground spinners can all be used without a permit. Anything that flies, explodes, or behaves unpredictably, like bottle rockets, Roman candles, and firecrackers, is illegal without a permit from the State Fire Marshal. If you are celebrating with legal fireworks, keep it safe: - Keep a bucket of water or a charged hose close by. - Light one at a time, on a hard surface, away from people, pets, and buildings. - Never try to relight a dud. Soak it in water instead. - Soak all used fireworks in water before throwing them away. Fireworks are not allowed in state parks, on beaches, or on state and federal forest lands, and some areas have local restrictions, so always check before you celebrate. Using illegal fireworks is a crime. They can be seized, and misuse can bring fines of up to $2,500, plus responsibility for the cost of any fire they cause. We broke ground on the future home of the Hillsboro Police Department. Surrounded by community members, city leaders, and the officers and staff who serve Hillsboro every day, we celebrated a milestone years in the making: the start of construction on our new headquarters. This building will give our team the space and resources to serve our growing community for decades to come. It is also being built with the future in mind. The new headquarters uses mass timber construction, which stores carbon and reduces emissions compared to traditional materials. The wood used in the project accounts for an estimated total carbon benefit of about 1,581 metric tons of CO2. To put that in perspective, that is roughly equal to taking 334 cars off the road for a full year, or powering 167 homes for a year. Thank you to everyone who helped bring this project from vision to reality, and to the community we are proud to serve. This is just the beginning. Community Notice: Active Threat Training at RA Brown Middle School. This July, the Hillsboro Police Department will conduct active threat training at RA Brown Middle School, in cooperation with the Hillsboro School District, which is providing the use of the facility. If you live or travel near the school on these dates, you may notice a large police presence in and around the building and you may hear the sound of blanks being fired inside. This is a planned training exercise. There is no danger to the public and no cause for concern. Training dates and hours: July 1, 8, and 15: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 22: 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Location: RA Brown Middle School, 1505 SE Cornelius Pass Road, Hillsboro This training helps our officers prepare to respond and keeps our community safe. Last week we gathered to honor one of our own. After eight years of service, K9 Rocket is officially retired. Alongside his handler, Officer Scott Brennan, Rocket spent his career protecting this community, backing up his fellow officers, and winning over just about everyone he met, from families at public demonstrations to the fans who cheered him on at Hops games. At his retirement ceremony, we celebrated everything he gave to Hillsboro and sent him off to a well earned life at home with the Brennan family. Thank you for your service, Rocket. FATAL CRASH | On 6/23/26 at 8:50 PM, HPD officers responded to a crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist at E. Main St. and NE Century Blvd. The bicyclist, Connor Logan Navarro (19), did not survive. The vehicle's speed was believed to be a factor and the Washington County Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to investigate the crash. The driver of the vehicle, Guillen Contreras Salvador-Jaime (35), was subsequently arrested for Manslaughter in the second degree and Reckless Driving. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call non-emergency dispatch at 503-629-0111. HPD Case #26-12139
