Yesterday, at about 11:30 am, officers responded to a 6 car crash at SE 10th Avenue and SE Maple Street. Callers reported that one of the vehicles crashed into the Shute Park Library. Officers investigated and determined a driver attempted to make a last second lane change and collided with a garbage truck. The garbage truck lost control and entered the intersection, striking other vehicles, then rolled into the library’s northern side, breaking the windows. One of the involved vehicles, not believed to be the cause of the crash, fled the scene prior to police arrival. That vehicle is described as an early 2000’s Maroon Ford Focus. The Ford will likely have damage to the rear left side. 3 drivers and 2 occupants of the library received minor injuries as a result of the crash.

The driver who caused the crash was issued a citation for Careless Driving and has been recommended to the DMV for a license retest to determine if they still have the mental and physical faculties to drive safely.

Police are looking to identify the vehicle and driver that fled the scene. If anyone has information, they should contact non-emergency dispatch at (503) 629-0111 and reference case # 25-18069.When this happens, it's usually because the owner only shared it with a small group of people, changed who can see it, or it's been deleted.
