CBPD release - On July 22, 2026, at approximately 10:41 p.m., officers with the Coos Bay Police Department responded to a reported burglary in progress in the Empire area of Coos Bay. Upon arriving, officers parked a short distance from the reported location and approached the area on foot.  After determining the call was unfounded, officers returned to their vehicles. At that time, one officer discovered that his marked patrol vehicle was no longer where it had been parked. Officers on scene, along with dispatchers from the North Coos Dispatch Center, immediately used the vehicle's GPS tracking system to locate it. They quickly determined the patrol vehicle had been stolen and was traveling toward Charleston. With assistance from the Coos County Sheriff's Office, Oregon State Police, and the Bandon Police Department, officers located the stolen patrol vehicle several miles from where it had been taken. The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Rhonda Hanscom of Coos Bay. Hanscom was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Coos County Jail, where she was lodged on charges of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Theft in the First Degree, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. The stolen patrol vehicle was recovered without damage.
