Dr. Lorna Shanks, a family medicine physician based in Northeast Portland, is among a growing number of Oregon doctors that have ditched the insurance-centered health care system to instead offer primary care as a subscription service.

Dr. Lorna Shanks said she became a primary care doctor because she wanted to care for patients. Instead, she found herself overwhelmed by rushed patient visits, endless paperwork and constant staff turnover.
