Description

Rumana Monzur speaks at the 2025 District Conference. She is on stage behind a podium with the Magic of Rotary flag and behind her are flags of the world. She is wearing a beautiful blue saree and holding the microphone.

If you survive a murder attempt, you do not owe it to anyone to be inspirational. Your survival alone is a gift enough to the world. But Rumana Monzur’s joy and drive are tangible. You can’t help but be illuminated by her light. Her smile and her laugh are contagious.

Many of you had the opportunity to meet our fellow Rotarian when she presented at our 2023 DisCon. The Bangladeshi-Canadian human rights attorney has become a real friend of District 5110.

“You all are so warm and welcoming,” she said after giving some virtual presentations during Covid. Though she survived her husband’s violence, it left her blind. But she could hear and feel our warmth and enthusiasm, even over Zoom. We can’t wait to welcome her back!

On Thursday, May 15th she will be Zooming to the Oregon Coast. Join your friends in Port Orford at 12:30 pm Pacific to hear the latest chapter in her incredible story.

The award-winning “Out of Darkness” was published by Penguin Random House Canada, and Rumana has been doing book signings for the last year.

Written by bestselling author Denise Chong, “Out of Darkness” is already a finalist for the Crime Writers of Canada Awards and a Toronto Star bestseller. Rumana’s story is an important reminder that there is no “typical” domestic violence. It can affect anyone regardless of income or education. And Rumana herself is a joyful reminder of how fulfilling a purposeful life is.

In order for her to hear and feel our reactions, we will leave all guests unmuted. If you are able to join us, we ask that all guests plan ahead to make sure to be in a quiet space without background noise or distractions. We thank you in advance for committing to this accommodation so Rumana can hear you laugh and smile too.

See and hear you all on May 15th!
