Description
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Email Security Awareness & Organizational Impersonation
Official emails from The City of Coos Bay will always come from addresses ending with: @coosbayor.gov
There has been an increase in fraudulent emails impersonating trusted organizations. These messages often look official and are designed to trick recipients into clicking harmful links, opening infected attachments, or sharing sensitive information.
What These Emails Might Look Like:
•Sent from addresses that look almost right (e.g., [email protected])
•Urgent requests for payment, login verification, or account updates
•Unexpected invoices, documents, or links
•Vague or generic greetings ("Dear customer", "Attention required")
How to Spot and Handle Them:
•Check the sender’s full email address carefully
•Do not click links or open attachments from suspicious emails
•Ignore any messages with strange urgency or scare tactics
•When in doubt, don’t engage
What to Do:
•Report the email as phishing or spam using your email provider’s tools
•Block the sender
•Delete the message
Staying alert is the most effective defense!
