MAYOR'S MESSAGE Reflecting with Gratitude on a City Moving Forward As we move out of the holiday season and look toward the year ahead, I want to take a moment to reflect on where we are as a city—and what we have accomplished together. It is easy, at times, to focus on the challenges before us and overlook the meaningful progress happening all around. But when we pause and take stock, there is much to be proud of in Coos Bay. Over the past year alone, private investment in our community has been substantial. Based on recent building activity, more than 300 permits were issued, representing over $15 million in investment. And that figure does not even include major projects such as Timber Cove or the Englewood development, which together represent tens of millions of dollars more in economic activity. These numbers tell an important story—one of confidence in our city’s future. They reflect people and businesses choosing to invest here, to build here, and to grow here. Equally important, though often less visible, is the public investment that supports this growth. Infrastructure improvements—our roads, pump stations, and wastewater treatment facilities—are critical foundations that allow our community to thrive. These projects represent significant long-term investments by the City, ensuring that Coos Bay remains safe, functional, and prepared for the future. None of this happens by chance. It is the result of thoughtful leadership, steady collaboration, and the hard work of City staff across all departments. I am incredibly thankful to serve alongside a dedicated City Council and a professional, committed staff who work every day to make a real difference for our residents. As we turn the page into a new year, I hope we can all take pride in what has been accomplished and carry that momentum forward. Coos Bay is moving in the right direction, and together, we are building a strong foundation for the years to come. -Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos BayPhotos from Coos Bay - City Government's post

MAYOR'S MESSAGE As we approach the Christmas holiday and prepare to close out the year, it feels especially fitting to pause and reflect on the many reasons we have to be thankful. The end of the year offers a natural moment to look back with appreciation and to look ahead with optimism for what the coming year may hold. I want to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who lives, works, and contributes to the City of Coos Bay. Time and again, our community demonstrates what it means to come together supporting one another, lending a hand when it is needed, and showing resilience through challenges and celebrations alike. It is this shared spirit of care, cooperation, and pride that defines Coos Bay and makes it such a special place to call home. Earlier this week, several City Councilors had the opportunity to personally thank our City staff for their dedication throughout the year. We stopped by City Hall and other City facilities with homemade treats as a small gesture of appreciation for the more than 130 employees across six departments and multiple locations who work every day to keep our community safe, welcoming, and well-run. It was a simple act, but a heartfelt one. As we move into the holiday season, I hope your days are filled with peace, warmth, and time with loved ones. May the New Year bring fresh possibilities, renewed energy, and continued strength for our community. Thank you for being the people who make Coos Bay such an extraordinary place. Warm holiday wishes and best hopes for the year ahead. With gratitude, -Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos BayPhotos from Coos Bay - City Government's post

PRESS RELEASE Redeveloped Englewood School Site – 30 New Homes Boost Workforce Housing Historic School Site Offers Vibrant New Neighborhood, Homeownership Opportunities Coos Bay, OR — Coos County, the City of Coos Bay, and Oregon developer Compass Communities Englewood LLC have announced a new residential infill development on the former Englewood School site. The project will deliver 30 new homes designed to provide homeownership opportunities for individuals and families in the Coos Bay area. The Coos Bay planning commission reviewed initial plans at its December 9 meeting; the planning commission now sends its recommendations to the City Council for a final decision in January. The newly planned neighborhood will feature a mix of single-family homes, duplexes, and townhomes. All homes will be built on-site and are intended to be occupied by homeowners. The homes will range from approximately 1000 SF (2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths) to 1400 SF (three bedrooms, two baths), market-priced between $225,000 and $325,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with the first homes available by next summer. Preferences for the new homes will be given to local workers and employers at prices that are attainable to local workers, seniors, veterans, and their families. This redevelopment will revitalize a historic site that has been empty since the Englewood School was destroyed by fire in 2014. After the fire, Coos County and the City of Coos Bay cleaned the demolished site with support from the State of Oregon. "This project represents an investment in our community’s future, provides quality housing options for the local workforce, and transforms a long-vacant property into a vibrant neighborhood," said John Sweet, Coos County Commissioner. Coos Bay Mayor Joe Benetti said the city is seeking to stimulate investment in the community while providing needed housing, "We’re proud to partner with Coos County and Compass Communities Englewood to bring this vision to life. Housing is essential for our local economy, and this development will help meet that need." A spokesperson for Compass Communities Englewood LLC – an Oregon-based privately-funded community development firm – responded, saying, "Our goal is to create neighborhoods where people who work here can afford to live here. Coos Bay and Coos County have been excellent partners on the Englewood project. The Englewood School is a model for how the public and private sectors can work together to solve housing challenges."
