During the week of October 19 - 23, 2026, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office in coordination with Lincoln County Health and Human Services, Reconnections, and Agape Respite Center hosted a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. Some topics covered during this training were: - Mental Health First Aid - Trauma Informed Care - Crisis de-escalation - Suicide Prevention - Substance Use Disorders - And many more... Eleven team members from the Sheriff's Office were able to attend this valuable training opportunity. Other agencies in attendance were Newport Oregon Police Department, Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians, and Reconnections. Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT) are designed to improve the outcomes of encounters between law enforcement and individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. The CIT model was first developed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1988 and has since spread across the United States and Internationally. ***Media Release*** Case# S202601700 On October 27th, 2026, at approximately 11:45 PM, a Coos County Deputy was dispatched to a residence near Coquille Oregon, to the report of a dispute taking place. The Deputy arrived on scene and began speaking with all parties that were involved with the dispute. As a result of the Deputy’s investigation, Matthew T. Smith (41), was arrested for Assault in the Fourth Degree (Domestic), as well as a Probation Violation. Smith was transported to the Coos County Jail where he was booked and lodged. “Police action is not indicative of guilt. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.”
