Description
On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the histories, cultures, and continuing contributions of Indigenous peoples.
As a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and Coquille School District’s Title VI Liaison, I am grateful to share a piece of my heritage. Pictured here is my fourth great-grandfather, George Lowrey, who served as Assistant Principal Chief of the Eastern Cherokee. His dedication to his people is a meaningful part of my family’s story.
My Cherokee heritage is one part of the many distinct Indigenous histories represented in our school community. Today, I also honor the Tribal Nations of Oregon and the Native students and families who enrich our district, each with their own identities, traditions, and stories.
Serving our students means listening, respecting those differences, and helping every Native student feel seen, valued, and proud of who they are. Today—and throughout the year—let us continue learning from Indigenous voices and celebrating the living cultures and communities around us.
