MAYOR'S MESSAGE
Sunset is Fired Up for Reading Growth
One of the greatest investments we can make in our community is encouraging a lifelong love of learning in our young people. Recently, I had the pleasure of learning about the Sunset Middle School reading event where students were recognized for their commitment to reading throughout the school year.
The event was made even more special through the participation of the Coos Bay Fire Department, whose firefighters helped present the school's "On Fire" Reader Awards. These awards celebrate students who have demonstrated dedication to reading and personal growth through literacy—an achievement worthy of recognition.
Our firefighters serve the community in many ways beyond emergency response. Whether teaching fire safety, participating in community events, or encouraging educational success, they continue to be positive role models for our youth. Their presence at this event helped reinforce an important message: reading opens doors, builds confidence, and creates opportunities for future success.
I want to congratulate all of the students who earned recognition through the program. Your hard work, curiosity, and commitment to reading are something to be proud of. I also want to thank the teachers, school staff, families, and the Coos Bay Fire Department for working together to support and encourage our students.
Strong communities are built through partnerships, and events like this demonstrate how schools, families, and public servants can come together to inspire the next generation. We are fortunate to have dedicated educators and community members who invest their time and energy in helping our young people thrive.
Congratulations to all of Sunset Middle School's "On Fire" Readers. Keep turning pages, exploring new ideas, and discovering where a good book can take you.
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay
