MAYOR'S MESSAGE

Spring is in the air and we are waking up to more sunny days than rainy days. This is a time for spring cleaning and preparing for the busy summer months. Spring cleaning throughout the City is important as we all spend more time outdoors and we have the opportunity to showcase the beauty of our community and surrounding natural environment. Many in our community have started this work with pulling down the cobwebs, cleaning gutters, even adding some fresh paint. There are several opportunities coming up where you can lend a helping hand towards a similar effort:

Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting their annual Bay Area Brigade focused on cleaning up areas surrounding Hwy 101 in Coos Bay and North Bend. This event is planned for May 4, 2024, starting at the North Bend Fire Department at 8:30 a.m. The event ends at the Coos Bay Fire Department at 11:30 a.m. where the winning team (Marshfield, North Bend, Southwestern) is awarded the coveted trophy.

Oregon’s Bay Area Beautification (OBAB) holds their Second Saturday Cleanup each month at various locations throughout the Coos Bay/North Bend area. On May 11, 2024 they will meet at the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery to clean up the grounds in preparation of Memorial Day. For more information contact OBAB at https://www.4obab.org/.

United Way holds their annual Day of Caring in Coos County on June 8, 2024. This event gathers volunteers to help those in our community to get their yards in shape, who are otherwise unable to complete this work on their own. Check-in is at the Coos Bay Fire Department and the event runs from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. For more information and to sign up contact the local United Way office at 541-267-5202 or info@unitedwayswo.org.

Additionally, this is the time that area businesses can spruce up their ‘front door,’ including surrounding sidewalk areas, helping to get ready for the summer foot traffic. As you likely know, property owners are responsible for sidewalks that adjoin their property, allowing for everyone to pitch in on the clean-up effort.

And if you are feeling extra energetic, after tackling projects at your home and participating in one or all of the events above, check out Adopt One Block. This organization supports individuals in their effort to take care of their communities. Registration provides an opportunity to select your block for adoption, commit to a year of regular weekly cleanups, and the organization even provides supplies to complete this work.

The Coos Bay Farmers Market is nearly upon us and summer festivities will follow shortly, including Coos Bay’s 150th Birthday. Get out and enjoy the sunshine as spring unfolds into summer.
