MAYOR'S MESSAGE

Earlier this week, interviews were held for an open Library Board position. With three qualified applicants, the interview process offered the opportunity for the City Council to interact with each applicant prior to deciding on the formal board appointment. Karen Forsythe was the selected candidate to fill the Library Board vacancy resulting from a resignation, for the remainder of the position’s term through June 30, 2026.

Upon reflection of this board appointment, it seems there is value in sharing the importance of the roles of advisory boards, such as the Library Board. The Coos Bay City Council relies upon the expertise and experience of the many appointed members of advisory boards, committees, or commissions. These advisory boards provide a valuable resource in the City Council’s decision-making process, along with helping reduce timelines for the governing process. An advisory board can discuss a topic, gather data, review alternatives, and ultimately provide a recommended course of action to the City Council, helping to ensure an efficient government process.

It is also important to note that the appointed members of these advisory boards are voluntary, as are the elected positions on City Council. There are over ten different advisory boards, committees or commissions, currently filled with nearly 70 engaged citizens and community members, doing their part to help Coos Bay be the place we are all proud to call home. A special thank you is extended to these volunteers who give their time and expertise, both in attending meetings and in review of meeting materials, on one of these advisory boards: Budget Committee, Design Assistance Team, Library Board, Library Facilities Steering Committee, Livability Committee, Parks Commission, Planning Commission, and Tree Board.
