SOLE MATES AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS BOOST OUTDOOR ACTIVITY

Last Saturday, the Sole Mates revealed their Walking Guide, the culmination of partnership with Oregon Health & Science University and the Coos Bay Library, engaging with twenty members of the Coos Bay community. The partnership entailed community engagement that identified members interested in a research study to learn the impacts of walking with others and encouraging civic involvement. This effort also gave the group access to funds which were used to create the Walking Guide. Reference Librarian, Paul Addis, took the lead in this two-year long project which is nearing completion.

The Walking Guide includes details on nine walking trails found in the Coos Bay and North Bend area. Each trail is described, with a trail map included, photos and amenities. The Walking Guide also includes trail maps for Coos Bay Boardwalk, Mingus Park, Millicoma Marsh Trail, John Topits Park, Cape Arago Trails, Airport Heights Park, and Ferry Road Park.

Printed Walking Guides will be available at the Coos Bay Library and the Coos Bay Visitor Center. Interested walkers in the community might also enjoy connecting with the Park Pack of Coos Bay & North Bend, a local walking group that regularly meets to walk in one of the many parks in the area. You can find the group on Facebook to participate in one of their upcoming walks.

I want to extend my gratitude to this group for increasing interest in the community for getting outside, enjoying our beautiful natural environment, and increasing physical fitness. Please consider joining the Park Pack, as well as take the opportunity to join Oregon’s Bay Area Beautification (OBAB) for their Second Saturday Cleanup at the Millicoma Marsh Trail tomorrow, January 11, 2025. Registration starts at 12:45.
