DUI ARREST I On the evening of July 17, 2024, a Hillsboro officer attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations. The driver chose to flee. Out of concern for the public’s safety, the officer did not pursue the car.

A short time later, it was found driving erratically. Officers acted cautiously as they followed the vehicle until stop sticks effectively slowed it. Stop Sticks are devices used to flatten the car’s tires so the driver cannot continue to flee. The vehicle continued to drive slowly on flat tires until an officer initiated a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) to stop the car. A PIT is a maneuver an officer uses to immobilize a suspect’s car.

Once stopped, officers determined the driver was under the influence of intoxicants and mentally altered. The suspect was transported to the hospital for their altered state and mental health care rather than jail.

The Hillsboro Police Department prioritizes public safety while addressing criminal behavior. We do this through intervention techniques and the use of appropriate facilities for offender care. We commend the officer’s decisions in this event for the safety it provided to our community and this offender.Photos from Hillsboro Police Department's post
