UO release - EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon has extended the contract of athletic director Rob Mullens through the 2032-33 academic year, as Oregon Athletics continues to build on a period of unprecedented success, both competitively and academically. The extension was approved by the Board of Trustees on Monday, June 23rd. The terms of the contract extension are funded entirely through athletics revenues and donor support. "Rob has provided visionary leadership for Oregon Athletics, and this contract extension reflects our deep confidence in his ability to guide the department well into the future," said University of Oregon President Karl Scholz. "His commitment to competitive excellence, academic achievement, and providing the best possible student-athlete experience embodies the very best of what it means to be a Duck." Since his arrival in 2010, Mullens has overseen one of the most successful eras in Oregon Athletics history, as during his tenure the Ducks have won 18 NCAA championships along with football appearing in seven New Year's Six bowl games and two national championship games while winning six conference championships, women's golf, men's basketball, women's basketball, and volleyball all earning Final Four berths, and softball advancing to the Women's College World Series six times. Mullens led Oregon Athletics through its transition into the Big Ten Conference, and in the first year in the league, Oregon won a league-best eight conference championships – the most in a single academic year in school history. "Providing a first-class experience for Oregon student-athletes will always be our top priority. Oregon student-athletes have also thrived under Mullens' leadership, with the Ducks producing three Academic All-Americans in 2024-25, and more than half of the all-time Academic All-American honorees in program history during Mullens' tenure. Mullens is currently the fourth-longest tenured athletic director among Power Four institutions and has served in several national leadership roles, including as chair of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. Oregon Athletics is financially self-sustainable, meaning the entire athletics budget, including this contract extension, is paid for with revenue generated by athletics through ticket sales, media rights, sponsorships, merchandising, gift funds and other sources. The University of Oregon recently announced a $25-30 million structural deficit in its main "E&G" fund for next year. The E&G fund covers the lion's share of the university's operational and labor costs and is separate from the athletics budget. This contract extension will not affect either the UO budget deficit or actions that the university will take to address that deficit.
