Description
A person died Friday night after they fled the scene of a reported disturbance in Gresham and a sheriff’s deputy shot them.
Gresham Police Department officers and Multnomah County deputies said they were called to the scene of a physical disturbance at Northeast 162nd Avenue near Northeast Glisan Street at around 7:30 p.m.
That intersection is a commercial area, with corners that include a church, an auto repair shop and a produce market.
According to police, witnesses said one of the people involved in the disturbance was armed. Police said officers determined probable cause to arrest the armed person for assault and other crimes.
When officers approached the identified person, he ran away, officials said.
A sheriff’s deputy found the person in a nearby neighborhood and police say “an officer-involved shooting occurred.” A Gresham police officer also shot a less lethal round in the shooting.
The pursued person was shot and a handgun was found where they fell, police said. The person was pronounced dead after an ambulance took them to a hospital.
The deputy is now on critical incident leave according to department protocol. Neither the person shot and killed nor the deputy involved in the shooting have been identified.
No other details about the reported disturbance or the deadly shooting have been released.
