MAYOR'S MESSAGE Blackberry Arts Festival Returns to Downtown Coos Bay Downtown Coos Bay will once again welcome the Blackberry Arts Festival on August 23–24, 2025. For more than forty years, this event has transformed Central Avenue into a hub of creativity, music, and community celebration. The festival began in the early 1980s as a way to showcase local artists and celebrate the abundance of blackberries that ripen along the Oregon Coast each August. What started as a modest gathering has grown into a two-day event that draws visitors from across the region. At its heart, the festival is a juried arts and crafts fair, filling downtown with booths featuring handmade work. Guests will find metalwork, jewelry, quilts, candles, hand-painted clothing, wine, carved wood, and more. Adding to the atmosphere is the Blackberry Jam stage at Central Avenue and Third Street, where live performances keep the streets lively throughout the weekend. Another highlight is the “It’s All Berry Good” recipe contest, where cooks and bakers showcase their best blackberry-inspired creations. Judged on taste, creativity, and presentation, the contest is a flavorful reminder of the berry that inspired it all. FALL BRUSH PICKUP IN COOS BAY Les’ Sanitary Service will be hosting a brush pick up day on Tuesday, September 2, 2025: •Brush pile must be out prior to the first day of pickup. Brush placed out after the deadline will not be picked up •In order to complete the brush pickup on schedule, each street will receive one single pass. We will be updating the city on our progress in a timely manner •Brush pile not to exceed 2 level full standard pickup truck loads •Only 2 level full standard pickup truck loads will be picked up. If your pile exceeds the maximum amount, the entire pile will be left. If you are unable to haul it yourself, you can contact our office after we have finished your area. We can haul it for you for a trip fee + $19.00 per cubic yard. Or you can make arrangements to self-haul •Brush must be in one pile five feet or less in length. •Brush must be out next to the curb free from overhead obstacles, fire hydrants, or other obstacles. •One pile per residential address. No commercial. No group piles. No empty lots. •No grass clippings, sod, dirt, loose leaves, plastic bags, baling twine or other materials that are not appropriate for grinding. Ivy OK. The decision reflects the Council’s commitment to encouraging development that best supports community needs and long-term economic vitality. The action comes after a review of existing facilities and future land use considerations. Currently, Coos Bay has thirteen self-storage facilities, providing more than twice the amount of storage space typically required for a community of this size. With demand already being met, the Council determined that allocating additional commercial or industrial land to new storage facilities would not serve the community’s highest priorities. During the Council discussion, staff highlighted that self-storage facilities, while useful, generally contribute little to job creation, housing availability, or street-level activity. In contrast, commercial and industrial lands are in short supply and are essential for projects that support local employment, housing development, and economic growth. As Community Development Director, Chelsea Schnabel explained, “We know we have a need for more housing, we have a need for more economic development. The land we do have, we want to optimize that.” The moratorium will remain in place for up to twelve months, during which time the City will review zoning regulations and land use codes. This process will ensure that future development aligns with community goals for economic opportunity, housing supply, and vibrant commercial corridors. Existing self-storage businesses are not affected by the resolution, and residents will continue to have access to the storage capacity already available. Council members expressed appreciation for the thoughtful approach, noting that this temporary pause allows the City to preserve valuable commercial and industrial lands for higher and better uses.
