Congratulations to Deputy Giles for recently completing Patrol training! Lane County Sheriff’s deputies assigned to Patrol must complete the Field Training and Evaluation Process (FTEP). They also attend Basic Police Academy at the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Deputy Giles has been with the Sheriff's Office for over two and a half years and reassigned to Patrol after working in the Lane County Jail. Deputy Giles grew up in Newport, on the Oregon Coast. Giles’ father was a firefighter which he says had an impact on his desire to serve others from an early age. After graduating from OSU with a civil engineering degree Deputy Giles went to work for the city of Eugene as a project manager. However, he felt himself called in another direction and his desire to make an impact in his community led him to apply with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. Completing Police Services FTEP is no easy task, it requires a tireless commitment. Deputies must rotate between shifts often working long past their normal secure time. They adapt to different day off patterns and move between coaches in order to gain the knowledge required to be successful. Obviously, this can be very stressful for family at home.
