10/17/25 - Deputies and officers teach, attend Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training This week, the Lane County Regional Crisis Intervention Team hosted a 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training at the Springfield Police Department and Hillview Baptist Church in Springfield. This regional training is offered to local law enforcement agencies in Lane County. The Regional Crisis Intervention Team is made up of coordinators from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, the Eugene Police Department, and the Springfield Police Department. The team is assisted by a steering committee made up of stakeholders in the local mental health community. Last month’s training attendees included personnel from the Springfield Police Department, Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Eugene Police Department, Junction City Police Department, Willamalane Parks and Recreation District, Lane Transit District, and Atlas Protection Agency (private security). CIT Training consists of classroom instruction to educate participants about mental health, addiction, de-escalation, and alternatives to incarceration. The curriculum includes specific lessons about local resources and programs, commonly encountered mental health conditions, tactical communication strategies, and presentations from community members with lived, first-hand mental health experiences. The training includes discussions specific to unique communities law enforcement officers may encounter, such as military veterans, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and developmentally disabled individuals. Near the end of the week of training, attendees participate in scenario training based off of real situations. Finally, the training concludes with a segment on officer resilience and mental wellness. This training provides a solid foundation for local law enforcement to call upon when approaching persons in crisis and to help community members receive the best outcome possible.Photos from Lane County Sheriff's Office's post

10/14/15 - Deputies arrest multiple impaired and reckless drivers over the weekend The Lane County Sheriff’s Office does not have a dedicated traffic team or deputy assigned to DUI enforcement due to lack of funding. However, our deputies are committed to the safety of our community, and that includes our roadways. Please consider others if you choose to drink or use drugs: 🚙 Plan your safe ride home ahead of time 🍺 If you drink or use drugs, do not drive for any reason 🔑 If you know someone has been drinking or using drugs, don't let them drive 💃 If you host a party with alcohol, make sure all guests leave with a sober driver 👍 And please, always wear your seatbelt! Over the weekend, deputies arrested several drivers for DUII. Each of these cases could have ended tragically, as our deputies often see out on our roads. Please drive safe this fall! On October 8th, deputies responded to a report of a driver who appeared impaired and was inhaling nitrous oxide - known as “whippets” - while in the drive through of a business in Veneta. Deputies located the vehicle nearby and contacted the driver, Martin Abram Larson, 41, of Cheshire. After additional investigation, Larson was arrested for DUII. On October 10th, just before midnight, a deputy observed an SUV driving poorly on Beltline Highway near Coburg Road in Eugene. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and contacted the driver, Elder Youany Roblerovalasquez, 37, of Eugene. The deputy observed signs Roblerovalasquez was impaired. After additional investigation, Roblerovalasquez was arrested for DUII. On October 11th at about 7 p.m., a deputy observed a vehicle driving poorly on Highway 99 near Roosevelt Boulevard, Eugene. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and contacted the driver, Checklin Jonathan Vaifale, 55, of Eugene. The deputy observed signs Vaifale was impaired. After additional investigation, Vaifale was arrested for DUII. On October 12th, just after midnight, a deputy observed a vehicle driving poorly on Beltline Highway near River Road, Eugene. The deputy initiated a traffic stop and contacted the driver, Seth John Fallenstein, 47, of Springfield. The deputy observed signs Fallenstein was impaired, and after additional investigation, Fallenstein was arrested for DUII.

10/09/25 - Deputies arrest wanted man after shots fired, pursuit On October 9th at about 11:30 p.m., a Lane County Sheriff’s deputy located a suspicious pickup parked on Herman Cape Road in U.S. Forest Service land north of Florence. The deputy contacted the driver and passenger. The driver, Tyler Ashton Leavitt, 41, of Indiana, had a warrant for his arrest out of Indiana for Disarming Law Enforcement, Criminal Recklessness, and Resisting Law Enforcement. When deputies attempted to arrest Leavitt, he accelerated the pickup in the direction of a deputy on the narrow forest road, striking a patrol car. Fearing for the deputy’s life, a second deputy fired at Leavitt, however he was not struck. The first deputy was able to dive out of the way of the pickup. Deputies pursued Leavitt. He attempted to turn into a driveway in the 5000 block of Herman Cape Road, but was initially stopped by a locked gate. Leavitt reversed his pickup and rammed into the patrol car behind him, then drove through the gate, causing significant damage. Leavitt drove off-road through a fence back onto Herman Cape Road, where a deputy conducted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT), disabling the pickup. Leavitt was arrested without further incident. Leavitt was lodged in the Lane County Jail on the following charges: - Fugitive from Justice (for the Indiana warrant) - Attempt to Elude by Vehicle - Four counts of Recklessly Endangering - Reckless Driving - Two counts of Assault on a Public Safety Officer - Three counts of Criminal Mischief in the 1st Degree - Resisting Arrest Thanks to Oregon State Police and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during this incident.
