Congratulations to our newest graduates from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards & Training (DPSST) Basic Police Academy!
Deputies Bertsch, Burgess, Douglass, and Trento graduated from Basic Police Class #449 today after 16 weeks of training. Each of them served as deputies at the jail and on transport prior to this additional training.
Deputy Bertsch was a professional athlete prior to working at the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Burgess started his public service as a volunteer firefighter with a Lane County rural fire department.
Deputy Douglass received the Lee M. Brown Award for scholastic achievement. She also has prior experience as a police cadet with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, and follows in the footsteps of her father, who recently retired as a detective with the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Trento is assigned to the Lane County Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team. While home for a weekend during academy, he successfully deescalated an armed suicidal person, safely ending a 10-hour standoff.
From here, these deputies will continue field training on patrol for several more months.
We look forward to your continued service to our community out on the road and beyond!

Carl Wilkerson has been unanimously appointed Lane County Sheriff by the Board of County Commissioners. Sheriff Wilkerson will serve in his appointed capacity through 2026 and, if elected by voters in 2026, would begin a full four-year term in 2027.
“I am both honored and humbled to continue to serve the Sheriff’s Office and our community in this new capacity,” said Sheriff Wilkerson. “I am very proud of the men and women who make up the Sheriff’s Office. I appreciate how hard they work and their passion to serve the Lane County community. I want to thank the Sheriff’s Office staff, the community, and most importantly, my family in supporting me throughout my career.”
Sheriff Wilkerson has served as Chief Deputy of the agency since 2019 but began his career with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office more than 30 years ago as a cadet in the Explorer Post, a Marine Patrol boat aid, and as a reserve deputy sheriff before being hired as a deputy with the agency in 1996. During his tenure with the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Wilkerson has worked in nearly every assignment available in the agency, including Corrections, Patrol, Criminal Investigations, the Metro SWAT Team, Traffic Safety Team, and Special Response Team.
As the Chief Deputy, Sheriff Wilkerson supervised the division commanders of the Police and Corrections divisions and was the Division Commander for the Operations Support Division. He was responsible for personnel, labor relations, budget, training, the Office of Professional Standards, the radio network, and a variety of other tasks, including serving as incident commander of Lane County’s emergency operations center during the Holiday Farm Fire and other wildfires.
Sheriff Wilkerson is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, Class 277. He has attended the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association Command College, the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association Sheriff’s Institute, and he holds an executive police certification through the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. Sheriff Wilkerson earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Bushnell University.
Sheriff Wilkerson’s appointment follows the retirement of former Sheriff Clifton Harrold who served as Sheriff from 2019 to 2025.

Need to size up your growing child's life jacket for the summer?
Come see us on June 14th at the Springfield Elks Lodge!
Last year, the Springfield Elks Lodge purchased 250 life jackets to support every child in Lane County having access to a life jacket. This year, the fun continues!
Bring your child and an outgrown, lightly used life jacket to exchange for a properly fitting life jacket. We will help check jackets for form, fit, and function. Exchanged life jackets will be inspected for safety and handed back out to other children. Leftover jackets will go to loaner stations around the county.
This event is first come, first served, and your child must be present for sizing.
The event will be held on Saturday, June 14th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Springfield Elks Lodge, 1701 Centennial Blvd, Springfield.
Thanks to the Springfield Elks Lodge for sponsoring and hosting this event!

“It’s just weed!”
“They’re not hurting anyone!”
“Don’t you have anything better to do?”
We hear you.
But it’s not just about illegal cannabis being grown in our area.
It’s about human trafficking. Fentanyl. Stolen guns. Dried up wells. Dumped chemicals. Ruining the market for legitimate growers who play by the rules.
Since 2022, Lane County Sheriff’s illegal marijuana investigations have led to the seizure of:
- 3,200 Fentanyl pills
- 20+ pounds of Methamphetamine
- 1.6 pounds of Cocaine
- 1/4 pound of Heroin
- 100 pounds of psilocybin
- 100+ firearms, many stolen
- Multiple recovered stolen vehicles
The Marijuana Team’s drug detection K9 Bear has also assisted many area agencies on drug cases not listed here.
Sgt. Wallace spoke with KVAL earlier this month about why the Lane County Sheriff’s Office stood up a Marijuana Team with grant funds from the state of Oregon. Listen in to learn more.
--
These investigations would not be possible without the ongoing grant funding from the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission’s Illegal Marijuana Market Grant (IMMEG). This grant was created in 2018 by the Oregon Legislature to assist local law enforcement agencies and district attorneys’ offices in their efforts to address the illegal marijuana market in Oregon. Illegal marijuana growing operations often violate more than just state's cannabis lawskval.comAn illegal marijuana growing operation in Lane County recently busted up by local authorities serves as a reminder of the larger impact these operations have.
