Ah Ying was nine years old when she was kidnapped. Traffickers shipped girls from China to Chinatown in San Francisco, including author Russ Low’s great-grandmother. Once in America, she found herself in as much danger from gangs as she was from the missionaries who were supposed to care for her.
Back during the quarantine, many of you had the opportunity to “meet” Dr. Russell Low and read his first book,
Three Coins, about Ah Ying’s escape from slavery and her ultimate love story – the beginning of his family’s story in the U.S.
We were fortunate to welcome him back to hear the story of Ah Ying’s sons who fought for the U.S. during WWII, a story he chronicled in
The All-American Crew about the WWII B-24 Liberator Crew that disappeared over New Guinea and the families they left behind.
For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to hear Dr. Low speak, we would love to have you join us. He is a one-of-a-kind storyteller. His ability to share his family’s uniquely personal story as universally human is a gift you don’t want to miss. It has been featured on the History Channel, NPR, Public Radio International, the Voice of America, and at the Smithsonian Museum of American History.
On
April 1st, 2025, at 6 pm Pacific, Dr. Low will share the story of his grandfather, Hop Lee, who survived the Chinese Exclusion Act era. “
A Willow Tree Becomes a Forest” is the journey of a Chinese boy who arrived in Salem, Oregon with nothing. Hop Lee’s dream of “becoming American” in the Pacific Northwest is a celebration of the immigration experience against all the odds, racism, and racist laws.
Dr. Low will have books for sale after the presentation, and you can purchase signed copies. All proceeds go to a nursing scholarship he and his wife created after he survived a life-threatening injury. They turned their debt of gratitude to the nurses who cared for him into an educational opportunity for future nurses – the CSUSM Foundation (California State University at San Marcos).
Join your friends and fellow Rotarians at The Davis Restaurant in downtown Eugene for a night of history, literature, and fellowship.
