Bandon Police are issuing a public safety warning about a recent and dangerous rash of power line wire thefts affecting the greater Bandon area, including parts of Coos and Curry counties. Nature of the Threat: Individuals have been illegally cutting and removing wire from utility infrastructure. Police describe these acts as “extremely dangerous” and capable of causing severe injury or death to the thief and others nearby, including residents, utility workers, and emergency responders. Damaged power lines and equipment pose an extreme fire risk, especially in dry conditions. Legal Consequences: Cutting or tampering with power lines is a serious felony. Possible charges include Domestic Terrorism in the 1st Degree and other applicable felonies depending on circumstances. Safety Advice for Residents: Do not approach anyone near utility poles or power lines who does not appear to be a legitimate utility worker. Report suspicious activity immediately to law enforcement. If safe, note: Location of the activity; Description of the person or vehicle; Direction of travel. How to Report: Call 911 for emergencies.
