ARBOR DAY - April 26, 2024
By City Council Proclamation, the City of Coos Bay observes Arbor Day on the last Friday of April each year. In celebration of Arbor Day 2024 city staff planted 30 trees in Ed Lund Park, Mingus Park and Topits Parks. This year’s trees were provided at cost to the City of Coos Bay by Coos Watershed Association.

Coos Bay achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Coos Bay has maintained Tree City USA recognition for 30 consecutive years.

Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Now, it is observed throughout the nation and the world. Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper and wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products. Trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community. Coos Bay has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting endeavors.
