The greatest holiday gift – or year-end bonus – doesn’t come in a box. Great leaders give the gift of presence, and the best ones do it all year long. Employees (and Rotary members) may forget what you gave them, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. Your presence as a leader is a powerful tool. Be mindful. Show up fully. Treat your people not just as employees or members but as valued partners and friends.

I learned this lesson early on in life when I worked as a nanny for a girl named Elizabeth. She lived in the most elegant home in the wealthiest neighborhood of the city. Her bedroom suite was pink and stunning – filled with beautiful clothes, shelves lined with dolls and teddy bears, and a canopy bed with embroidered sheets. During the holidays, the Christmas tree was surrounded by presents for Elizabeth. But what this poor little rich girl really wanted wasn’t under the tree.

The True Gift: Your Presence

Despite her abundance of material gifts, Elizabeth rarely had her parents’ attention. They were often too busy with golfing, travel, and social events to spend time with her. That experience stayed with me and shaped how I interact with people. In honor of Elizabeth, I practice being truly present.

Here are some ways you can give the gift of your presence at work and at Rotary, not just during the holidays but every day:

  • Get to know your team members as people. Ask about their families, hobbies, and ambitions. Show that you see them as more than members or employees.
  • Focus on others during conversations. Ask about their challenges, interests, and goals. Let them lead the conversation so they feel heard and valued.
  • Be an active listener. Eliminate distractions, make eye contact, and genuinely engage with what they’re saying.
  • Create a distraction-free zone. Turn off your phone, shut down your computer, have calls held, and clear your desk to show you’re fully focused.

While bonuses and gifts are appreciated, they quickly fade from memory. The connections you build through your presence create lasting loyalty and trust. When you practice presence year-round, you strengthen relationships and unlock your team’s potential.

So give the gift of your presence. It’s a gift that makes your club, your business – and your leadership – soar. Remember, you haven’t peaked yet!
