Description

Winter weather alerts are in place for most of western Oregon this morning, from the coast to the east slopes of the Cascades.

Along the Willamette Valley, a winter weather advisory for accumulating low-elevation snow is in effect through noon. Some flurries fell Wednesday morning at elevations over 500 feet, including Interstate 5 at Capitol Highway.

This National Weather Service weather hazard map shows winter weather advisories (purple) and winter storm warnings (pink) covering most of western Oregon.

Temperatures were mostly above freezing in the Portland metro area, and there was no sign of snow early Wednesday morning below 500 feet. Still, traffic officials warned that roadways, especially on bridges and overpasses, could become slick and hazardous.

Several schools, offices and organizations in the area closed or delayed their openings Wednesday morning. That includes the city of Vancouver’s municipal offices.

In the Coast Range, a winter storm warning was put in place through 7 p.m. Wednesday. Heavy snow fell early Wednesday morning along the Coast Range passes, including U.S. 26 at Timber Junction and Oregon 6 at Gales Creek Road.

Drivers were urged to consider postponing travel over the Coast Range Passes until weather conditions improve.

The winter weather advisory along the Cascades calls for continuing snowfall through 4 a.m. Thursday, with up to 6 more inches expected by then.

Traffic officials advise drivers to have winter emergency driving kits readily available and check road conditions before heading out. For the latest road conditions and chain restrictions in Oregon, call 511, or visit TripCheck.
