Members of the Carteret Fire Department escaped without injury after their Marine Unit 2 rescue boat was struck by a breaching whale near Raritan Bay while returning from a Fourth of July security assignment in New York Harbor.

A New Jersey fire department rescue boat sank after being struck by a breaching whale while returning from a marine security assignment tied to Fourth of July festivities in New York Harbor, forcing firefighters to abandon the vessel before it slipped beneath the water. All crew members were rescued without injury, officials said.
