The Newberg Tigers (1-0) look to continue their strong start when they host the Nelson Hawks (1-1) in a nonleague matchup Friday night. The Tigers are coming off a 50-12 road victory over Canby in their season opener, while Nelson aims to bounce back from a 43-15 defeat to Timberline of Boise last week in a game played in Eagle, Idaho. Newberg’s offense is led by quarterback Parker Sellner and features running back Deaken Santrizos and two-way standout Ethan Hein at wide receiver and defensive back. The Hawks counter with quarterback Danny Leary, senior receiver Ian Nix and senior standout defensive back Chaz Katoanga. Nelson downed visiting Newberg, 39-15, in last season’s head-to-head. Opening kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT on Friday, September 12 with a live TV broadcast on NFHS Network.
