The number of Americans with no permanent home of their own rose an estimated 18% from January 2023 to January 2025, the federal government reported Friday. Oregon was the only state in which most jurisdictions, including Multnomah County, did not conduct a new point-in-time count in 2024, the federal report said. (Eric Risberg | The Associated Press)

The United States saw an 18% increase in homelessness this year, a dramatic rise driven mostly by a lack of affordable housing as well as devastating natural disasters and a surge of migrants in several parts of the country, federal officials said Friday.
