Description

The Upper Applegate Fire has grown to over 300 acres in Southern Oregon. In this photo posted to Facebook on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, smoke can be seen rising from the fire in Jackson County.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation orders Wednesday after a fast-growing wildfire broke out in Southern Oregon.

As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 1,000 people faced some degree of evacuation notice, ranging from orders to leave immediately to warnings to prepare and get ready.

The Upper Applegate Fire, located southwest of Medford, is estimated to be over 300 acres – with 0% containment.

The Oregon State Fire Marshal has deployed two structural task forces from Lane and Marion counties to help crews battling the fire. Several air resources have also been ordered.

“This is our third mobilization this month, a clear signal that wildfire season is here,” said state Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple in a press release. “We need to do everything we can as Oregonians to be wildfire aware. This fire season has been devastating already with the tragic loss of homes in the Gorge and a second conflagration earlier this week in Jefferson County. Please help our firefighters by following local restrictions.”

An emergency shelter has been set up at Jacksonville Elementary School at 655 Hueners Lane. The Jackson County Expo Fairgrounds in Central Point is also accepting livestock.

Upper Applegate Road is closed between Little Applegate Road and Hamilton Road while firefighters work in the area.
