Oregon combined for eight wins and eight top-10 program marks Friday. UO release - EUGENE, Ore. – Diana Cherotich made the most of her UO debut with a school record at 10,000 meters Friday night at the Stanford Invitational. Cherotich stopped the clock in 31:45.22 to win the top section of the event and become the first woman program history to dip below 32 minutes in the 10K. Cherotich and teammate Juliet Cherubet, third in 32:02.78, both eclipsed the previous Oregon standard of 32:06.64 set by Jordan Hasay in 2013. With their performances, Cherotich and Cherubet became the ninth- and 17th-fastest performers in collegiate history, respectively. Arkansas' Paityn Noe ran 31:59.22 and finished second in Friday's race. Between the Stanford Invitational and Battle at the Beach, the team collected eight wins and eight top-10 program marks. Members of the UO distance crew were in Stanford with the rest of the team at the one-day meet in Long Beach. With eyes on securing West Region qualifiers in the 10,000 meters, the UO men also collected a trio of top-10 program times led by a 28:21.32 from Aiden Smith, now the No. 6 performer in school history. He finished third overall in section two of the final race of the night, wrapping up just before 11:30 p.m. Teammates Quincy Norman (28:27.08) and Abdel Laadjel (28:29.17) moved to seventh and ninth on the UO all-time list, respectively. The Men of Oregon also got times of 28:30.32 from Evan Bishop and 28:31.08 from Evan Burke. At the end of conference weekend, the top 48 individuals and top 24 relays in the region advance to the NCAA West First Round in College Station, Texas. At the Battle at the Beach, Kyle Gibbs became the eighth UO man to clear 18 feet, and first since 2017, with Friday's outing. He needed a third-attempt make at this opening height but went on to clear 5.51 meters/18-1 and move into fifth on the program's all-time list. Based on marks entering the weekend, Gibbs ranks second in the Big Ten and third nationally. The UO men got another win and top-10 program effort from Safin Wills in the triple jump. On his first trip down the runway, Wills posted a measure of 15.80m/51-10 and became the Ducks' No. 10 outdoor performer in the event. All three of his legal jumps were at least 51 feet. Ryann Porter won the women's triple jump with a day's best of 13.01m/42-8.25. Newcomer Aidan Elbettar added his name to the UO record book with 58.29m/191-3 mark in the discus, good for the 10th spot in program history. He was fourth in Friday's competition. Elbettar and teammate Kobe Lawrence—sixth at 56.03m/183-10—continue their weekend Saturday at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. Lawrence won the shot put Friday with a season's best of 18.87m/61-11. All four legal marks during his series were far enough to win. The first wins of the day came from Kohana Nakato (49.49m/162-4) and Pat Vialva (68.87m/225-11) in the javelin. Both marks also doubled as season bests and sit among the top five in the Big Ten through the first few weeks of the outdoor campaign. The Ducks' haul at the Battle at the Beach also included five runner-up finishes including NCAA indoor runner-up Aaliyah McCormick who opened her outdoor season Friday. She posted a wind-aided 13.07 (+2.3) in the 100 hurdles. The runner-up list also featured the men's 4x100-meter relay, Ella Clayton in the 400 meters, Annaleise Taylor in the 400 hurdles and Emily Fitzsimmons in the pole vault. The Battle at the Beach was a five-team invitational that also included Grand Canyon, host Long Beach State, LSU and USC. Benjamin Balazs, down in distance from his steeplechase specialty, ran a lifetime best of 3:41.59 in the second section of the 1500 meters in Stanford. He lowered his best by nearly seven seconds from last year's Stanford Invitational when he ran 3:48.41. In Friday's race, Balazs and teammate Jeffery Rogers (3:41.73) went 1-2, respectively.
