MAYOR'S MESSAGE As many of you know, for the last two years the City has been underway with an upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant located at 680 Ivy Avenue. This type of construction project, while necessary and important, can impact the neighbors due to noise, dust, road closures, and detours. You may have also noticed that Koos Bay Boulevard between North Sixth and Seventh Streets have been closed, and flaggers or detours have been in place since February. This closure and detour are allowing the contractor to install the outfall piping that will serve the new plant upgrades. Sometimes with underground construction, unexpected delays can occur, which is what is happening now and causing this street to be impacted. The good news is there is an end in sight. The detour will be removed at the end of August or early September and Koos Bay Boulevard will be reopened. There will be one more planned activity that will close Koos Bay Boulevard, scheduled for October and will last two weeks. There will be a detour in place and all of the local businesses will have their access maintained and accessible. The overall plant upgrade project is scheduled to be completed early 2026. I would like to take a moment and acknowledge my appreciation to the neighbors and local businesses for continuing to work with the City through this construction process along with a special thank you to Dave’s Pizza, Airgas Welding and Safety Supplies, and Valkyrie Fitness. In partnering together, we will see the successful completion of this upgrade project and have a wastewater treatment plant that protects the water quality in our Bay for years to come. -Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay
