Description

This combination of two photos shows a northern spotted owl on the left and a barred owl on the right. Starting Thursday, the Oregon Department of State Lands will start shooting hundreds of barred owls a year in the Elliott State Research Forest to save a dwindling population of spotted owls.

The Oregon Department of State Lands says it will shoot and kill barred owls in the Coast Range starting on Thursday, becoming the first agency in the state to take part in a controversial federal effort to curb the invasive birds and boost dwindling northern spotted owl populations.
