On July 8, 2023, Duprie Smith sped through the intersection of Southeast 102nd Avenue and Stark Street, slamming into a car carrying Ryan Ambrose, 11. Ryan died from his injuries. The family erected a memorial near the spot of the crash. (This photo was taken days after the wreck and shows a pedestrian walking into the scene.)

The Oregonian/OregonLive won 33 awards in the Society of Professional Journalists’ regional contest, surpassing last year’s tally of 22.
