Firefighters at Fire Squad 1 in downtown Portland wait for emergency calls Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 16, 2023. Pictured is some of their medical equipment that includes Naloxone (Narcan), a life saving drug that helps people overdosing from opioids. The drug can be injected or inhaled through the nostril. The station responds to about 300 overdoses a month.

Washington County health officials will offer a free training on overdose awareness and prevention next week.
