City of North Bend release - Store evacuated; public area deemed not at risk as Oregon State Police Explosives Unit assists. Officers from the North Bend Police Department were dispatched at about 11:36 a.m. Tuesday to Goodwill at 3698 Broadway for a report of a suspected explosive device. Upon arrival, officers cleared the building to ensure the safety of staff and patrons. The Oregon State Police Explosives Unit was contacted and responded to assist. Investigators determined the regular public area of the store was not at risk. Goodwill was advised that the area could be reopened at the store’s discretion while the investigation continued. The devices appeared to be small homemade items. They were safely removed from the store and will be disposed of off-site. Based on the investigation, the devices appear to have been unintentionally donated rather than deliberately placed. They did not have a remote activation mechanism and were designed for ignition only by a crude candlewick (Visco) style fuse. The North Bend Police Department thanked Goodwill staff for their observations and patrons for their cooperation during the incident. North Bend Police were assisted by the Oregon State Police Explosives Unit and Coos Bay Police Department.
