Description

Deborah Albin listens to proceedings in the Benton County Courthouse on Thursday, May 28, 2026, during her criminal trial over the death of her 2-month baby, Opal. Albin was convicted of manslaughter and criminal mistreatment on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when a jury affirmed she failed to act on her knowledge that Opal’s father, Andrew Oaks, used drugs around Opal and abused her.

When a child is abused, it’s not only the abuser who can be criminally charged. Across the country, a parent can also be prosecuted for not doing enough to stop it.
