School age kids and their families are invited to October’s FREE Saturday STEAM events at Coos Bay Library! 📚 From 2:30pm–3:30pm on Saturday, October 3, youngsters are invited to make their own paper fidget called a flextangle (also known as a hexaflexagon or kaleidocycle). Choose from one of our fun templates or create your own design! There won’t be a Saturday STEAM event on Saturday, October 10, but in its place we’ll be hosting an exciting bilingual alebrije workshop with guest artist Jessica Zapata. This event is for young people aged 9 to 12 and will take place from 2:00pm–4:00pm. Pre-registration for this free event is required. Register @ https://www.coosbaylibrary.org/event/creating-alebrijes-jessica-mendoza-19298 From 2:30pm–3:30pm on Saturday, October 17, we’ll be joined by rangers from Siuslaw National Forest to explore how birds' beak shapes are survival superpowers. We’ll test skills, try out “beak tools,” and discover why in nature, the right beak means the right bite. Arrive a little before 2:30pm to get great seats and be ready to stay for an hour of learning, guided discovery, and a game. Finally, we’ll be shaking things up from 2:30pm–3:30pm on Saturday, October 24 with The Big Shake Challenge! Inspired by the Great Oregon ShakeOut earthquake drills (held on October 15), this family challenge asks you to build the tallest tower you can using only cups and index cards. Library staff will gently shake the paper underneath each tower to simulate an earthquake. Will your tower survive the shake?
