Description
In 1998, researchers at Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control published a groundbreaking study about various kinds of childhood trauma that can have lasting, negative health impacts later in life.
These Adverse Childhood Experiences include neglect, sexual or physical abuse, or witnessing violence inside the home or within the community. The researchers also found that the more ACES a person has, the higher their risk for developing mental illness or chronic illnesses such as diabetes and cancer, among other negative health outcomes.
We revisit a conversation we first aired in April 2018 with a panel of health experts on ACES, including Dr. Nadine Burke Harris. She is the founder of the Center for Youth Wellness in San Francisco and helped develop a screening tool for childhood trauma.
