In abandoning the 2023 Resilient Columbia Basin Agreement, the Trump administration has made a myopic, science-denying decision that hurts the Pacific Northwest (“Trump ends historic Columbia River deal with tribes, Northwest states on endangered fish,” June 12).The agreement was an unprecedented opportunity to save our endangered salmon and orcas while ensuring that the services provided by the four Lower Snake River dams are replaced. The cooperative work of the agreement has now been scuttled, and the adversarial court action, paused by the agreement, will now resume. The fact sheet and the memorandum released by the administration make specious claims regarding the dams and the agreement. They also fail to mention a crucial reason for the studies and for the removal of the dams: The dams violate tribal treaties.
