Description
On Christmas Eve, the peace was shattered around 11:15 pm by the crash of an SUV into the house at the southeast corner of Northeast 24th Avenue and Northeast Weidler Street, which promptly burst into huge flames as the gas line to the house was ruptured (“Car crashed into Portland house on Christmas Eve, causing fire,” Dec. 24). Virtually all of the residents of Sullivan’s Gulch have expected something like this - it was just a matter of when, and we are so grateful that there was no loss of life nor serious injuries (although the status of the driver who fled is not known). This could have been much worse, had more people been home at the time, and Portland Fire & Rescue deserves great appreciation for how they spent their holiday.
