Description
As a pediatric nurse, I am troubled that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may change the longstanding childhood vaccination schedule. Fringe theories and political noise are drowning out proven science, and the casualties of that shift will be our children and the public health of Oregonians and Americans.We are already seeing more stories of outbreaks of preventable diseases, (“Oregon sets record for whooping cough cases amid declining vaccination rates,” Dec. 10). Too often these outbreaks lead to the tragic deaths of young children. Now the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is reconsidering fundamental elements of a schedule that has protected children for decades. These recommendations determine how doctors vaccinate patients, how easily families can access vaccines and whether insurance will cover them.
