Mark Hatfield would be difficult to fit into Oregon politics today.He was a Republican grounded in his Christian faith, in his family and in deeply held convictions. But those convictions belonged to him, not his party. Hatfield’s service in the Pacific during World War II and his observations in the aftermath of the bombing of Hiroshima shaped beliefs that sometimes aligned with Republicans and sometimes put him dramatically at odds with them.
