Description

In response to the recent letter decrying the Trump Administration’s proposal to increase logging (“Readers respond: Logging proposal not the ‘godsend’ counties need,” March 23): I disagree with the letter writer’s statement that infrastructure does not exist. A recently closed mill in Philomath is being converted to produce mass timber, which utilizes forestry biomass not suitable for traditional lumber. With consistent supply, many mills can be reopened. Automation, rather than being a reason for declining employment as claimed by the author, will ensure 24-hour operation and increasing efficiency.
