Human health, quality and long-term utility affordability need to be priorities as Oregon addresses an urgent housing crisis. Oregon’s “Built Smart from the Start” law, along with the forward-thinking code updates that Gov. Tina Kotek and Oregon’s Building Codes Division have created, will ensure that rapid construction goes hand-in-hand with low operational costs. This will shield working families and fixed-income residents from volatile energy expenses by prioritizing high-efficiency electric heat pumps and rigorous weatherization standards, (“Readers respond: Heat pumps another hurdle to affordable housing,” Aug. 26).
