As a member of the Portland Public Schools Board of Education, I see firsthand how federal immigration enforcement tears at the fabric of our community. When Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers show up at bus stops, outside schools, in our neighborhoods and at workplaces, children come to school afraid their parents might not be there when they get home. Physical and psychological safety are necessary conditions for learning, and the terror ICE brings to our communities means children are unable to focus on their education.
