Description
Providence has announced another round of layoffs in Oregon, affecting more than 150 positions.
Eighty-four of those are with the Providence Health Plan, the Catholic health system’s Portland-based insurance arm. It offers commercial, individual, small group and Medicare Advantage plans that cover 490,000 members.
Providence did not detail a specific reason for the layoffs. Earlier this year, Providence switched administration of its own employees’ health coverage in seven states to a competitor, Aetna. That meant 120,000 fewer customers for Providence’s insurance division.
In a message that went out to employees, Don Antonucci, the president and CEO of Providence Health Plan, acknowledged the hard timing of the announcement, as people prepare to gather for the Thanksgiving holiday next week. He said people impacted were being offered severance and assistance finding new jobs.
“Decisions that affect our colleagues and teams are never easy,” Antonucci wrote. “They reflect the significant challenges our industry is facing.”
The balance of the positions being eliminated are spread across Providence Medical Group, the health system’s network of primary and specialty care clinics in Oregon. Most of the roles being cut are administrative, not clinical, according to Providence Oregon CEO Jennifer Burrows.
The layoffs are the latest in multiple rounds of cuts that Burrows has said will continue until the company is breaking even in the state, where it has lost $100 million annually on its operations for several years running.
“While we are seeing progress, our efforts will continue until we balance revenue and expenses,” she wrote in an email to staff.
According to Burrows, not every position being eliminated will amount to a layoff, with some employees offered other jobs internally.
Providence employs more than 125,000 people in seven states with headquarters in Renton, Washington and Irvine, California.
After several years of major losses, Providence recently reported making a small profit, $21 million, on its operations in the third quarter of 2025.
