Les Schwab South Coast Holiday Basketball Tournament

Redmond’s boys and Philomath’s girls walked away with the tournament championship trophies at the 2024 Les Schwab Tires South Coast Holiday Basketball Tournament at Marshfield High School Saturday. The three-day tourney featured sixteen-teams from around the State including local schools North Bend, Coquille and the host Pirates. Redmond, out of the 5A Intermountain Conf., downed Marshfield (7-2) 57-43 in the championship game, and Philomath beat 3A Far West League team, Sutherlin, 49-39 in capturing the girl’s championship. Marshfield’s girls (4-5) lost the third-place game to Sky-Em League rival Junction City 56-47. The two teams will meet three more times when league starts. Coquille’s girls (5-1) took fourth place with a 48-52 win over 5A Bend. North Bend’s boys (2-7) lost the seventh-place game to Junction City, 49-46. The first of four meetings between the two teams this season. The tournament also featured a three-point shooting contest. Aly Aragon, Mtn. View, won the girl’s title, while Kaleb Losoya, Redmond, won the boys. Redmond’s Wyatt Horner was named the boy’s tournament MVP, and Anneka Steen, of Philomath, was the girl’s MVP.

Prep girls’ basketball scores Friday, Dec. 20: 4A – Newport (1-5) won at Westside Christian, 43-20. Brookings-Harbor beat Hidden Valley, 43-21 at Creswell in the Battle of I-5. 3A – Myrtle Pt. beat visiting Glide, 45-31. Toledo (5-2) won at Siuslaw, 32-24. 2A – Bandon won at Monroe/Alsea, 56-47. Reedsport (1-6) beat visiting Riddle, 54-42. Lost River won at Gold Beach (2-5), 61-22. 1A – Pacific (2-2) beat visiting South Wasco Co., 43-41. Saturday: 4A – Brookings-Harbor (4-4) lost 52-37 to Cottage Grove at Creswell in the Battle of I-5. 2A – Bandon (5-2) won at Lowell, 55-18. Waldport (4-3) downed visiting Camas Valley, 57-44. Myrtle Pt. (7-0) beat Lost River, 33-27 at Gold Beach. 1A – Powers (3-5) beat visiting South Wasco Co., 54-36. Prep Boys’ BBX, Friday, Dec. 20: 4A – Newport (4-2) lost at Westside Christian, 63-58. Brookings-Harbor lost 59-32 to Hidden Valley at Cottage Grove in the Battle of I-5. 3A – Glide won at Myrtle Pt., 49-38. Siuslaw (5-2) beat visiting Toledo, 72-29. 2A – Bandon won at Monroe, 35-26. Saturday, Dec. 21: 3A – Douglas beat Brookings-Harbor (0-8), 39-28, at Marist Catholic in the Battle of I-5. 2A – Visiting Camas Valley beat Waldport (2-5), 64-55. Bandon (5-2) won at Lowell, 58-26. Lost River beat Myrtle Pt. (3-5), 68-43 at Gold Beach. 1A – South Wasco Co. won at Powers (3-4), 55-39.

Prep wr-Grants Pass

Crater’s boys won the 35-team Grants Pass Varsity Winter Kickoff Saturday in Southern Oregon. Siuslaw was 13th, and North Bend tied for 26th. Individually, North Bend’s Jackson Swanson lost in the 157 lb. third place match after advancing to the championship semi-finals. Siuslaw junior Jacob Mann won the championship at 215. Out of the 14-weight classes, Crater won seven and took second in three. Thirty-one teams competed in the girls’ tournament at Grants Pass. North Medford was first, Siuslaw fifth, and North Bend 19th. Individually: Siuslaw senior Abby Riggs was runner-up at 115. Viking teammate Macali Lade, also a senior, was second at 120. Siuslaw senior Tosha Abraham took third at 125. The Vikings’ Danin Lacouture was runner-up at 145. North Bend senior Kaylianna Mazzucchi won the championship at 155.

Prep wr-Coquille

Oakridge (79 pts.) won the 13-team Coquille Holiday Girl’s Wrestling Tournament Saturday. Coquille (45) took second, followed by Marshfield (41), Myrtle Pt. 8th (24), Reedsport 12th (3), and Brookings-Harbor (0). Individually: 105 – MHS, Pagie Johnson, Fr, 3rd; Reed, Hunny Boreleson, Fr., 4th; BH, Frankie Ramierz, Fr., fifth. 110 – MHS, Aniya, Soph., 2nd; 130 – MP, Star Harless, Sr., 2nd; 135 – MHS, Sophia Hussey, Sr., 3rd; MHS, Renee Anderson, FR., 4th; 145 – MHS, Lana Wright, Fr. 2nd; 155 – MP, Tatum Giles, Soph., 3rd; 170 – MHS, Azura Beckett, Jr., 2nd; 190 – MP, Jayme Padgett, Jr., 1st.
