Marshfield’s boys sit in first place in the 4A Sky-Em League after the first of three rounds. The No. 1 ranked Pirates (4-0, 13-2) beat second-ranked Marist Catholic (2-1, 9-4), 49-41 Friday night at Eugene. North Bend had the bye. No. 13 Cottage Grove (1-2, 7-8) is in third with a 66-59 win at fourth-place Junction City (1-2, 5-9). Other 4A boy’s games: No. 9 Newport (9-4) won at Gladstone, 51-38. Previous No. 1 Baker fell 65-58 at No. 3 Cascade (9-3). The Bulldogs (9-7), defending State Champions, are now No. 4. 3A FWL Boys: Douglas won at Coquille, 52-25. Siuslaw lost at Sutherlin, 48-37. 3A SOC Boys: Brookings-Harbor lost 66-43 at St. Mary’s. 2A Valley Coast Conf. Boys: Waldport lost at Crosshill Christian, 44-23. 2A Sunset Conf. Boys: Illinois Valley won at Gold Beach, 61-51. Oakland won at Bandon, 62-33. Reedsport beat visiting Myrtle Pt. 34-31. 1A Skyline Lg. Boys: Visiting Yoncalla won at Pacific, 57-40. Saturday, Jan. 18th: 1A – Powers lost at Camas Valley, 66-39. Pacific fell 56-45 at Milo Adventist Academy.

Marshfield’s girls completed the first of three rounds of prep Sky-Em League basketball with only one loss leaving the Lady Pirates (3-1, 8-7) in at least a tie for first place. On Friday, Marshfield won at Marist Catholic (2-1, 8-5), Eugene, 46-35. Junction City (2-1, 9-5) beat visiting Cottage Grove (0-3, 7-8), 50-45. North Bend (1-2, 10-4) had the bye. In other 4A games, Newport won at Gladstone, 63-33. In the 3A Far West Lg. – Siuslaw lost at Sutherlin, 46-18. Douglas lost at Coquille, 55-6. 3A SOC – Brookings-Harbor won at St. Mary’s, 31-29. 2A – Waldport lost at Crosshill Christian, 49-27. Pleasant Hill won the 27-team Nick Lutz Invitational Boys’ Wrestling Tournament at Siuslaw HS, Florence, Saturday. The Billies tallied 178.5-points to Santiam Christian’s 167.5. Newport (85.5) came in sixth, Siuslaw (58.5) 12th, North Bend (55.0) 13th, Waldport (35.0) 20th, Gold Beach (31.0) 22nd, Myrtle Pt. (31.0) 22nd, and Reedsport (10.5) 26th. Pleasant Hill got off to a fast start winning the first three weight classes. Individually: 132: Victor Perez, New, 3rd; 138: Ivan Wagner, New, 3rd; 144: Parker Pruett, NB, 3rd; 150: Jackson Swanson, NB, 1st; 165: Nolan Timeus, GB, 2nd; 215: Jacob Mann, Siu, 1st; 285: Jonathan Padgett, MP, 2nd.

North Bend (96.5) was second and Marshfield (86.0) third at the 30-team Nick Lutz Girls Invitational Wrestling Tournament, Saturday, Siuslaw HS, Florence. Oakridge (98.0) took first place. Host Siuslaw (82.5) fifth, Newport (68.0) sixth, Coquille (66.5) seventh, Myrtle Pt. (50.) 11th, and Reedsport (10.0) tied for 21st. Oregon Classic, Redmond
Marshfield participated in the Oregon Classic High School Boys Wrestling Duals at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds, Redmond, Friday and Saturday. On Friday in Round One, the Pirates beat Molalla, 48-35, in the Second Round MHS over Madras, 48-27. In the Third Round Sweet Home prevailed 73-6 to win Group A. On Saturday, Marshfield wrestled Crook Co. and lost 72-12. That thrust the Pirates into the seventh-place match against Scappoose. The Indians prevailed, 43-30. Sweet Home beat Crook Co. for first place, 48-26.
