It wasn’t just Marshfield’s girls who fell in the first round of the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 4A basketball playoffs, no, the entire Sky-Em League was knocked out. The Lady Pirates (16-8) were league champs, but lost at home to visiting Baker (17-9), Friday night, 59-46. Marshfield’s game was the only home game among the league’s four playoff teams. Marist Catholic (14-10) lost at Seaside (14-9), 54-46; Junction City (15-10) fell at Cascade (18-6), 47-38; and, North Bend (14-11) lost at Philomath (21-5), 58-23.

Marshfield’s boys (21-3) advanced to the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Forest Grove HS, Thursday, March 13, to play against another Pirate team, Phoenix (17-7), in the championship quarter-final round. Phoenix knocked Newport (16-9) out of the tournament, 64-60, Saturday in Southern Oregon. Marist Catholic (17-6) was the only other Sky-Em team in the First Round, and the Spartans were eliminated with a 77-67 loss at home to Mazama (14-11), of Klamath Falls.

No. 1 Westside Christian (24-3), of Tigard, won the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union boy’s state basketball championship, Saturday night at Marshfield HS, with a 65-47 win over No. 2 Pleasant Hill (26-4). It was the classic “Swan Song” for the Eagles’ head coach David Henry. After being the runners-up for the past three-years, Henry’s team broke through with the win. It was also his last game as head coach at Westside Christian. He and his family are moving to Arizona where his wife works in the administration offices for Dutch Bros. He looks forward to coaching again and freely admits he is going to miss Westside Christian and especially this group of boys. Valley Catholic (21-8) of Beaverton won third-place over Oregon Episcopal (19-9), Portland, 75-60 and Cascade Christian (22-5), Medford, won fourth place with a 43-40 win over De La Salle North Catholic (15-15), Portland. Great crowds were in attendance for the three-day tourney, resulting in No Vacancies at many local Motels.

The Amity Warriors completed a perfect prep 3A basketball season with a 30-0 record after winning the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union State Championship, Saturday, at Marshfield HS, Coos Bay. It was a great championship game, 43-41 over Banks (26-4). Vale (26-2) took third with a 56-49 win over Jefferson (22-8) and Burns (21-8) was fourth with a 66-51 win over Cascade Christian (23-6).

Bandon’s girls placed third-place at the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 3A Basketball Tournament at Pendleton, Saturday. The Lady Tigers (22-8) upset No. 1 Stanfield (21-7) in the opener, 43-39, but lost in the semi-finals to eventual state champion Salem Academy (26-4), 43-34. In the third-place game, Bandon downed Weston-McEwen (23-8), 47-43 to take home a state trophy.
