Over 400 runners took in the 44th Annual Prefontaine Memorial 10K Run, Saturday, at Coos Bay. Marshfield Alumnus Jared Barrett returned home to win his fifth championship. He toured the course in 32:37.0, which was popularized by the legendary Steve Prefontaine when he used it for workouts during his high school years. Keeton Sanchez was second (32:57.3) and Henry Domnarski was third (33:02.6). North Bend’s Jennifer Dannenbring won the women’s portion (41:04.2), she was followed by 15-year old Hallie Pyfer, Klamath Falls, (41:16.3) and 12-year old Isabelle Smith (45:05.9). Former Coos Bay resident Janet Stamper-Holland (66), now living in Arizona, was fourth (47:01.4) which is a new record for her age group. Lily Mae Warrior (14) won the women’s two-mile run (14:19.9) and Rob Schenk (29) won the men’s (13:58.0). More than 800 competed in the overall races.

HS Prefontaine Run

The visiting Tauranga Boys’ College cross country team from New Zealand ran away with the team trophy at the 13th Annual High School Prefontaine 5K Run Saturday at Coos Bay. Tauranga scored 22-points after taking first-place with George Wyllie (15:09.4), followed by third-place, fifth, sixth and seventh. In between, Marshfield’s Jaxson Stovall was second overall for the second year (15:17.7) and Cascade Christian’s Sebastian Hehn was fourth (15:46.8). Bandon was second in the boy’s race with 98-points, followed by Grants Pass with 104. Twenty-five prep teams ran the course. Coquille sophomore Ella Henthorn won the girl’s race for the second straight year (18:02.1). North Bend’s Ellie Massey was second (19:02.8), followed by Jael Legutki, Bandon (19:20.3), and Addison Horning, North Bend (19:44.9). Grants Pass won with 71-points, followed by North Bend (94), Roseburg (96), Bandon (112), and Marshfield (128).
